Episode: The Mitten

Hello there, little ones!

Oma has been filling these final cold-weather days staying indoors doing one of her favorite things…

crocheting!

What do you like to do on cold blustery days?

Do you prefer to be inside reading books with Oma or with another loved one? Or even perhaps curled up all by yourself with a stack of books beside you?

Or would you rather be outdoors enjoying the winter wonderland as much as possible before all the snow melts away?

Either way, the main character from today’s book can help you to do both!

The Mitten

Illustrated by Jan Brett

When Nicki drops his white mitten, knitted together by his beloved grandmother Baba, in the snow, he goes on without realizing that it is missing.
One by one, woodland animals find the mitten and crawl in; first a curious mole, then a rabbit, a badger and others, each one larger than the last.

FINALLY, a big brown bear is followed in by a tiny brown mouse, and what happens next makes a wonderfully funny climax!

As the story of the animals in the mitten unfolds, you can see Nicki in the borders of each page, walking through the woods unaware of what is going on.  Be sure to watch for all the many extra-adventures he has along the way!!

Oh, my! It is so funny to see all the animals who squeeze into The Mitten!

The illustrator for today’s episode is Jan Brett, who is an American illustrator and writer of many well-known children’s picture books. She is known for colorful, detailed depictions of a wide variety of animals and human cultures ranging from Scandinavia to Africa. And today’s episode is one of her best-known titles!

In the story of The Mitten Mrs. Brett has once again created a dramatic and beautiful picture book in her distinctive style. She brings the animals to life with warmth and humor, and her illustrations are full of visual delights and details faithful to the Ukrainian tradition, from which the story comes.

I do hope you’ll join me in Oma’s Reading Room where we will discover together just how BIG a mitten can grow when it’s knitted (or crocheted) together with tender-loving care!
